Interesting perspective on China’s foray into the green market, from the new publication Asia 360:

Forget the image of China the polluter. The world’s largest emitter, in absolute terms, of carbon dioxide, is apparently going green. A quiet state-led revolution has been taking place, and people are starting to take notice, even those who have berated China for its environmental record.

Can you stay on top of competition when you have a great product (such as the iPhone)?

Half of our office in Singapore is using currently an iPhone. This isnt just great marketing, its proof of a great product. The iPhone single-handledly carried Apple over the past year and a half and revolutionized the mobile phone industry: Motorola is on the brink of collapse, Sony-Ericsson and Nokia and relocalizing in China, etc. But in a technology-centric industry, no matter how great your product is, you always need to have another one ready to take over fast, or else competition will eventually catch up and eat you alive.

So what’s next for the iPhone? In China, numerous ODMs are making their own cheaper iPhones already, and whereas Apple can hold its audience captive thanks to its iTune, applications, etc, they will surely lose market share to the Chinese iphone very soon. Here is the latest on those newcomers:

Lets face it, in our break-neck, high-tech, don’t look back culture, China tends to get a lot of flack for being–ahem–under-innovative. The number of articles written about China’s IP infringement/piracy and massive shanzhai industry are too numerous to count.
